lower home taxes
By Russell Hobgood
Homeowners, Are You Paying Too Much Property Tax ??? Did you know that as many as 60% of homes are assessed for too high of a value according to the National Taxpayers Union? This of course results in an incorrectly larger property tax bill to the homeowner. Chances are good that you might be paying too much tax so take the time to review your property tax bill. Doing so might just save you a nice piece of change. It only takes a few steps to correct if you are paying too much. First contact your local tax assessor’s office and ask for someone in the reassessment department. Ask how the process for submitting a property tax appeal works. Review the card on your property that you received in the mail. Confirm that the basic information is correct. For instance is the number of rooms and the square footage correct? If the number isn’t correct the county may change the assessment without a formal appeal. If everything is correct on your card but the assessment still seems high, your next move is to gather documentation to support an appeal. The easiest way to do this is with a current home appraisal. You can also check with your neighbors to see if any of them have had recent appraisals done before you pay for one yourself. If you have a current appraisal that supports the value being lower based on recent market value information (comp values), many county tax assessors will accept a copy of the appraisal with the appeal. Submitting an appeal is usually a fairly simple process, just make sure and be prepared with your documentation. Good news !! About 33% of property tax appeals succeed according to the National Taxpayers Union. So take the time to review the accuracy of your tax bill and you could save thousands of dollars during the time you own your home.
